"TOIT!" How our FPL squad picked itself (part 1)

Goalkeeper

  • Key insight. There's a large margin for error when it comes to choosing your goalkeeper due to the narrow range in performance and price. In other words, when it comes to points-per-dollar, a top-ranked keeper is not much better than a cheaper half-decent one that gives you money for a better squad.
  • The risks only become substantial if (a) you pick a "premium" keeper that ends up flopping AND worsens the rest of your squad or (b) if you pick an outright bad keeper that doesn't even give you baseline returns.
  • We think it's worth gambling on Trafford (Manchester City) who might be a first-choice keeper while costing only 5.0 - best of both worlds! Dubravka (Burnley, 4.0) is everyone's back-up buy of course.
  • Otherwise, you're more or less safe with any of the recommended sensibly priced picks with decent features, e.g. Sanchez (Chelsea, 5.0), Henderson (Crystal Palace, 5.0), Verbruggen (Brighton, 4.0).
  • Top keeper Pickford (Everton, 5.5) seems an unnecessary risk all things considered.
  • Also unsure about Sels (Nottingham, 5.0) as the keeper of choice, as the club failed to keep a clean sheet in the final 9 fixtures of last season - when they needed to but failed to do well! Sure they kept some clean sheets during pre-season - but failed to get on the scoresheet too for several matches, so it's been a mediocre lead-up at best.
